Directions: Route 80 West to Exit 34B onto Route 15 North. Take Route 15 North which eventually becomes Route 206 North. Continue on Route 206 North. Shortly after passing the entrance to Stokes State Forest on the right, make a left at the old Mezaluna Restaurant onto Route 521. If you pass the Escape RV sales on the left in Sandyston you missed your turn. Continue to the Route 521 Bridge and park on either side of the road.
Meeting Location & Time: We will meet at the dirt lot on the right side of the Route 521 Bridge at a time to be determined. Some people plan on camping at Stokes State Park for this trip. Contact Charlie Maccia for details.
Quarry: Mostly Rainbow Trout
River Access: Wading
Degree of Difficulty: Varies depending on area and pool.
Meals: Everyone is on their own for meals. If you plan on fishing through the afternoon, consider packing a lunch.
Licenses: A NJ fishing license and trout stamp is required. Licenses can be purchased online here.
Suggested Equipment: 9 foot, 5 weight, leaders vary depending on dries/wet/nymphs. 9-12 foot leader 4x-6x. Tippet-what you are comfortable with. Nymphing is a great way to fish at the gorge. A 10-11 foot 3-4 weight rod can be good for suspension and tightline nymphing.
Description: Flat Brook is about a 16 mile tributary to the Delaware River. It is a gentle flowing freestone river with pocket water, runs, riffles, and pools that starts around High Point State Park and ends at its confluence with the Delaware River.
Flat Brook fishes best in the 100-250 CFS range.
Flat Brook’s Catch & Release section for artificial lure and fly use only stretches 4 miles starting from the Route 206 Bridge then flows downstream through the Rt 521 Bridge, through the Three Bridges (aka Blewitt Tract), to the Roy Bridge on Mountain Road. The Little Flat Brook tributary joins the Big Flat Brook near the Three Bridges section.
The areas above the Rt 206 Bridge and below the Roy Bridge is not catch & release, but offer as-good, or better, trout fishing.
The area upstream from the Route 206 Bridge to the next small bridge in Stokes is a difficult area to wade due to rock size and it doesn’t have many holding features.
Hatch charts are located at Ramsey Outdoors, PerfectFly.com and at White Water Flies.
